When Saying Goodbye Doesn’t Mean Death

Sometimes losing an old dog does not happen through euthanasia or death.

Illness, housing changes, financial pressure, reduced mobility, family circumstances or a major change in lifestyle can sometimes mean an owner can no longer give their dog the environment, exercise, access or care they need.

In those situations, choosing to surrender or rehome a dog can be one of the most painful decisions a family makes — especially when the decision is made out of love rather than abandonment.

The grief can feel very similar to bereavement. You may still think about them, wonder how they are doing and feel guilt or sadness long after they have moved on to another home.
